How to Boot your Qualcomm Android Device Into EDL Mode: When your phone feels slow or you need more customization options on your device you turn your head toward Rooting. Though Rooting your Android phones and installing custom ROMs has become so much easier these days, still many people end up bricking their devices. You can easily fix a soft-bricked device but when it comes to hard-bricked it can get really annoying. But if you have got a Qualcomm chipset inside your device the process of unbricking can get simpler.

Smartphones with a Qualcomm chipset under the hood comes with a special boot called the EDL mode or Emergency DownLoad mode. EDL mode can be used to force flash firmware files to unbrick your device or to restore the stock ROM. If your device software gets corrupted, it can happen due to flashing wrong ROM or any software which was not compatible with your device, you can revive your device by flashing firmware by going into Fastboot and Download mode. But sometimes, it can even corrupt your bootloader and due to a corrupt bootloader, you won’t be able to boot into Fastboot and Download mode, that is, your device just got hard-bricked.

Now here comes the EDL mode to the rescue. Different modes like the download mode, fastboot mode are present in the Secondary Bootloader and can get corrupted in case of wrong flash or incompatible software flash but the EDL mode is a part of Primary Bootloader on Qualcomm devices. So you can access EDL mode and can potentially unbrick your device. There are different methods to enter the EDL mode:

1. USING ADB:

Use this method when your device can boot into the OS and you need to get into EDL mode to restore the stock firmware.

  • Enable USB Debugging on your device.
  • Download the latest Android SDK tool package.
  • Extract the Android SDK tool package zip file on your PC.
  • Go to the extracted folder. The folder will contain ADB and other required files.
  • Now open a command line by holding the Shift Key and right-click on any empty space inside the extracted folder and select ‘Open PowerShell window here’ or ‘Open command window here’.
  • Connect your device to the PC.
  • Now enter the following command to boot your device into EDL Mode:  .\adb reboot edl
  • Now your phone will boot into EDL Mode.

2. USING FASTBOOT: 

Use this method when you can’t boot into the OS but can boot into fastboot.

  • Download the latest Android SDK tool package.
  • Extract the Android SDK tool package zip file on your PC.
  • Go to the extracted folder. The folder will contain ADB and other required files.
  • Now open a command line by holding the Shift Key and right-click on any empty space inside the extracted folder and select ‘Open PowerShell window here’ or ‘Open command window here’.
  • Then boot your device into Fastboot mode by pressing and the required key combination and connect your device to the PC.
  • Now enter the following command to boot your device into EDL Mode:  .\fastbootoemedl
  • Then your phone will boot into EDL Mode.

3. SHORTING JTAG PINS:

If none of the above methods work you can try shorting the test pins present on the device’s mainboard. You can use a metal tweezer or wires to short the test points and then connect your device to your PC and you’ll enter the EDL mode on your device.

Now you’ll be able to revive your hard-bricked Qualcomm chipset device using the Emergency Download or EDL mode.
